We’re big fans of audio drama and fiction podcasts here at The Podcast Host. As listeners we’re always looking for new shows to subscribe to, and as podcasters we’re always looking to help fellow creators grow their audience.
Each week we’ll pick the brains of someone who runs an audio drama or fiction podcast. We’re going to ask them what their show is about, how they go about making it, and what other fiction podcasts they’re currently enjoying.
This week we’re chatting to Larissa Thompson, producer of the fiction podcast series The Centropic Oracle.
The Centropic Oracle is a high quality audiobook podcast that features science fiction and fantasy short story writers and voice over artists.
We strive to publish stories that make you think and wonder – sometimes you’ll even laugh.
Why did you decide to start the podcast?
We were searching for a creative project to do together that would allow each of us to contribute skills that we are proud of.
As a writer, Charly could easily spot strong technical writing. As an actor and video producer, I knew the ins and outs of crafting character performances and sound production.
How did you come up with the idea?
Since we both adore science fiction and fantasy, especially in the audio format, and storytelling is a big part of our professional lives, it was a natural choice.
Can you give an insight into your process for writing the show?
We select our stories from open submissions based on an emotional connection, but the common elements are strong prose, relatable characters, and believable plots that encourages the listener to think about the world and their place in it.
For the vignettes, we don’t require all three components, but at least two of them have to be there and must wow us.
What about recording the show?
For us, a big focus is capturing the emotional element that drew us to accepting the story. Getting the tone just right is crucial – including which narrator is the best fit.
And producing the show?
Because we have narrators all over the world – one of them is based in Germany – the way we record is different based on their location.
For the out-of-towners, they record in their home studio and send our producer the files to be edited and mastered to our preferences. The locals come in to our studio in Vancouver, Canada for a one-on-one session with the producer.

What advice do you have for someone who wants to create a podcast like yours?
Read lots and lots of short fiction, and listen to audio fiction whenever you can, taking notes of performance styles you like and why you like them. Get to know actors in your community – even if it’s only online – so that you have a wide pool to draw from for matching voices to story style.
Invest in high quality recording equipment and sound dampening. Take the time to learn how to use it and don’t be afraid to experiment with the functions in your editing software. YouTube and Google will be your best friends!
