Google Podcasts has replaced Google Play as the Android parallel to Apple Podcasts. Many Android users turn to Google Podcasts to listen, so you’ll want to be sure they can find your feed.

So, how do you get your podcast into Google Podcasts? It’s easier than it seems–and you might already be there.

Check first

When you Google your podcast, does its website come up? Great! You’re in Google Podcasts.

Google is obviously a massive company that specializes in finding things. If your podcast has a website, and the website comes up in a Google search, you’re golden.

If you’re still not confident, you could google “ Google podcasts,” and the results might show your Google Podcasts link. You’ll know if the link is correct if it works like this one for This American Life.

You can also check the Podnews site by searching your podcast’s title. The site will give you a link that shows all of the podcatchers that your podcast can be found on.

But, of course, the easiest way to check is to check the app itself. Don’t have an Android phone? Reach out to a friend or to your listeners. It’s a quick way someone can give you a little help.

Here’s a quick breakdown of the requirements:

  1. You need a valid RSS feed. You’ve probably worked with RSS feeds before, but if you haven’t, you can find your RSS feed code using this tool.
  2. Your podcast’s homepage has to have some specific coding per Google’s requirements linked above. Essentially, it needs to match with your RSS feed. It also needs to have a description of your podcast.

You might be thinking, “But my podcast doesn’t have a website.” Great! This is a good incentive to make one.

If you use a popular hosting site like Libsyn, Blubrry, Pinecast, BuzzSprout, etc., you likely already have a “website” that is available to Google Podcasts.

Be sure to check your host’s Google Podcasts compatibility. If you use a hosting site for your podcast, the problem might be with your host, not your podcast or Google.

Still nothing? Make sure you’re not blocking Google

Some sites can’t be indexed by Google. If all else fails, be sure to check that you’re not keeping Google away from your podcast.

First, make sure that you are following Google’s checklist of websites they can index. Google makes this nice and clear for people making websites with a printable checklist you can find here.

If you’re following all of those directions, you can also inspect your URL. You can also request Google to index, or re-index, your website. This is a lengthy process, but if you believe there is something wrong with how your site is indexed in Google, it will be very beneficial.

Be patient, but don’t be intimidated

Google Podcasts is still somewhat new, and while Google is efficient, you might still just need to wait. This is especially true for new podcasts. Sometimes, your website or podcast just isn’t quite ready for Google to find it.

This is another great reason to make a trailer for your podcast that you can put on your feed before your first episode goes up. That way, you have some time for your visibility on every podcatcher to get sorted out. Another similar way of doing this is to launch with an “Episode Zero”.

Remember that Google is intuitive, and it is very good at what it does. If there’s a website out there it can find, it’s going to find it. That’s its job! There’s a reason we don’t use Ask Jeeves anymore. Google is just better at what it does than any other search engine.

RSS feeds and website coding can be intimidating for a lot of podcasters, but remember that if you use a hosting site, you can reach out to them for support.

If you don’t use a hosting site, it should be a quick matter of making sure the site you’ve built follow’s Google’s requirements. They even give you the code to use if you need it.

And if you don’t have a site at all, now is a great time to make one. It’s 2018, almost 2019! If you make anything, you should have a site for it.
